Revolution of the Sixties

The 1960’s was a time of many social revolutions in the United states. The first one was the civil rights movment. This was begun in earnest in the early sixties by the black people in the country, who were tired of being treated as second-class citizen. They demanded to be treated equally to the white majority in the country. Martin Luther King and Malcolm X were two vocal leaders of this movement. Both men were killed by assassins.

Another social revolution was happening for the women in the country. This movement was called women’s liberation. Women, too, were demanding equality with man in the workplace and at home. They wanted to be paid the same salaries and have the same job opportunities as men and they wanted to share the household tasks and the raising of children with the man in their lives.

The final social revolution in the sixties was the sexual revolution. Birth control methods were becoming more available and more acceptable, and people realize that they could have sex without the fear of pregnancy. Young people were also fighting against their parents’ generation and its idea that people had to be married before having sex. In conclution, many social movement that affect U.S. society in important ways began in the 1960s.
